Know your runway.
Savings ÷ monthly essentials = months. Write the number down. A realistic number is more useful than a vague sense of anxiety.
Cut non-essentials now.
Every $100 per month you cut extends your runway. Subscriptions, dining, extras — do it before you need to.
Check health coverage options.
You have 60 days to elect COBRA. Florida Medicaidmay cover your household at the state benefits portal.
Apply for food and utility assistance.
Apply through the state benefits portal. SNAP takes up to 30 days to process — apply sooner rather than later.
Call 211.
One call, every local resource. Food banks, rent assistance, utility help, childcare, mental health — specific to your county. Available 24/7 at 211.org or dial 211.
Unemployment benefits
File online through the FloridaCommerce (formerly DEO) at the state portal. Florida calls this Reemployment Assistance, not unemployment. $275/week is the second-lowest UI maximum in the US, unchanged since 2011. Duration is tied to the state unemployment rate — currently 12 weeks at FL's 4.7% rate (as of March 2026). Total maximum payout: $3,300.
