Rodent-Proofing the Home

A focused guide to keeping mice and rats out of your home. Entry points, materials, food storage, recognizing signs of activity, and what to do safely when droppings appear.

A single female house mouse can produce up to 35 young per year.1 A small problem becomes a large one quickly. The most effective and least toxic approach is to prevent entry in the first place: seal the gaps, remove the food, and make the home a place where rodents cannot establish themselves.

This guide focuses specifically on rodents. It builds on the general Exclusion and Sealing guide with rodent-specific entry points, materials, and the critical safety protocol for cleaning up rodent droppings.

This page covers prevention and safe cleanup. It does not cover trapping methods, rodenticide use, or active infestation treatment. If rodent activity persists after exclusion and food storage measures, contact a licensed pest management professional.

Recognizing signs of activity

Most people discover rodent activity from droppings, not from seeing the animal. Mice and rats are nocturnal and prefer to move along walls and edges in low-traffic areas. The CDC and university extension programs identify these indicators:2, 3

Droppings

Small, dark, rod-shaped pellets (1/8 to 1/4 inch for mice, larger and capsule-shaped for rats). Found along walls, near food sources, under sinks, inside cabinets, and on top of wall beams. A single house mouse produces approximately 50 to 75 droppings per day.1

Gnaw marks

Fresh gnaw marks appear rough and light-colored. Older marks are smoother and may look greasy. Mice gnaw through cardboard, thin plastic, electrical wiring, soap, and wood. Gnawed food packaging is a reliable indicator.1

Rub marks

Dark, greasy streaks along baseboards and walls where rodents repeatedly travel the same path. Their fur deposits oils that accumulate over time, marking established travel routes.2

Nesting material

Shredded paper, insulation, fabric, or dried plant matter gathered into dark, undisturbed corners. Check behind appliances, inside wall cavities, under stacked storage, and in attic insulation.

Sounds

Scratching, scurrying, or gnawing sounds in walls, ceilings, or under floors, particularly at night. If you hear these sounds regularly, investigate for entry points and droppings.

Where rodents get in

A mouse can fit through an opening the size of a dime, roughly 1/4 inch. A rat can fit through a gap the size of a quarter. Mice can jump up to 18 inches vertically and travel upside down along wire screening.4 These physical abilities mean that entry points are not limited to ground level.

The most common residential entry points, per the EPA and extension sources:3, 5

Pipe and utility penetrations

Gaps around water lines, gas lines, electrical conduit, and dryer vents where they pass through walls or the foundation.

Door thresholds

Gaps beneath exterior doors and the door between the garage and the house. Worn or missing door sweeps are a primary entry point.

Foundation cracks

Where the sill plate meets the foundation, around anchor bolts, and at any crack in the concrete. Settlement and age open gaps that were not present when the home was built.

Vents and screens

Damaged or missing screens on crawlspace vents, attic vents, and dryer vents. Rodents can gnaw through standard window screening, so use hardware cloth (1/4-inch mesh) for rodent exclusion.

Garage doors

Worn rubber seals on garage doors are one of the most overlooked entry points. If you can see daylight at the bottom or sides of a closed garage door, rodents can enter.

Roofline and eaves

Roof rats in particular enter through gaps where the roof meets the wall, open soffit vents, and damaged fascia. Tree branches touching the roof provide a direct pathway.

Food storage and attractant removal

Exclusion keeps rodents out. Food storage removes their reason to stay. Both are necessary. A sealed home with accessible food will still attract rodents through gaps you missed. A clean home with open entry points will still get rodents.

Pantry and dry goods

Transfer flour, grains, rice, pasta, cereal, and other dry goods from paper and cardboard packaging into glass, metal, or heavy plastic containers with tight-fitting lids. Rodents gnaw through cardboard, thin plastic bags, and cellophane easily.6

Pet food

Store pet food in sealed, rigid containers. Do not leave food bowls out overnight, indoors or outdoors. Pet food left accessible is one of the most reliable rodent attractants in residential settings.

Kitchen hygiene

Clean up crumbs and food spills promptly. Wipe counters and sweep floors in food preparation areas daily. Do not leave dishes with food residue in the sink overnight. Keep trash in a sealed container and empty it regularly.

Storage areas

Declutter storage spaces. Pull boxes and stored items away from walls so you can see behind them. Avoid storing food in garages, sheds, or other outbuildings unless containers are rodent-proof. Rodents use cluttered, undisturbed spaces for nesting.

Safe cleanup of rodent droppings

Do not sweep or vacuum rodent droppings

Sweeping and vacuuming can stir contaminated dust into the air. Wild rodents, particularly deer mice, can carry hantavirus, which spreads when dried urine, droppings, or nesting material is aerosolized. The CDC recommends wet-cleaning with disinfectant as the only safe method for residential cleanup.7, 8

The following cleanup protocol is based on current CDC guidance for residential settings.7 For heavy infestations, contaminated ventilation systems, or droppings in difficult-to-reach areas, contact a licensed pest management professional.

Ventilate. If the area has been closed up (a cabin, shed, attic, or garage), open doors and windows and leave the space for at least 30 minutes before entering.

Put on gloves. Wear rubber, latex, or vinyl gloves before touching any contaminated material.

Spray with disinfectant. Soak the droppings and surrounding area with a household disinfectant or a bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Let it sit for at least 5 minutes.7

Wipe up with paper towels. Pick up the droppings and disinfectant with paper towels. Do not use a broom, dustpan, or vacuum.

Dispose properly. Place paper towels in a sealed plastic bag. Remove gloves last and place them in the bag. Seal the bag and dispose of it in a covered outdoor trash container.

Mop or wipe the area. Clean all hard surfaces in the area with disinfectant. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water afterward.

When to seek medical attention

If you develop fever, muscle aches, or shortness of breath within one to eight weeks after exposure to rodent droppings or nesting material, seek medical care and inform the provider about the rodent exposure. Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome is rare but serious, and early supportive care improves outcomes.8

For renters

Food storage, kitchen hygiene, and safe cleanup are fully within your control. For entry points that require structural repair (foundation cracks, damaged vent screens, broken garage seals), document the issue with photos and request repair in writing from your landlord. In most jurisdictions, rodent entry points are a habitability issue and the landlord's responsibility to address.

Temporary renter-friendly exclusion options include removable door sweeps (no screws), copper mesh stuffed into pipe gaps under sinks (no adhesive needed), and sealed food containers in the pantry.

Common mistakes

Sweeping or vacuuming droppings

This is the most important mistake to avoid. Dry sweeping and vacuuming aerosolize potentially contaminated dust. Always wet-clean with disinfectant first, then wipe.7

Sealing entry points before addressing the current population

Sealing rodents inside the structure traps them in wall cavities where they die, creating odor problems and secondary pest attraction. Address the active population first (or hire a professional), then seal.

Relying on expanding foam alone

Standard polyurethane foam is not a rodent barrier. Mice and rats gnaw through it easily. Always pack steel wool or copper mesh into the gap first, then cover with caulk or foam.

Leaving food in original packaging

Cardboard cereal boxes, paper flour bags, and thin plastic wrapping are no barrier to rodent teeth. Transfer dry goods to rigid, sealed containers.

Ignoring the garage

The garage is often the weakest link. A worn garage door seal lets rodents into the garage. A missing sweep on the house-to-garage door lets them into the home. Check both.
