Pests do not appear randomly. They follow food, water, and shelter. Your yard is the first layer of defense, and small changes in how it is managed can make the difference between a home that attracts pests and one that does not.
Before a mouse reaches your foundation or a termite finds your sill plate, something in the yard drew it closer. Dense vegetation against the house, deep mulch touching the siding, firewood stacked by the back door, a dripping faucet creating a puddle, or pet food left out overnight. University extension programs consistently identify these conditions as the primary attractants that bring pests within range of the home.1, 2
This guide covers the habitat side of pest prevention: the outdoor conditions you can change to make your property less attractive to insects, rodents, and wildlife. None of this requires eliminating landscaping or making your yard look barren. The goal is thoughtful placement and maintenance, not removal. A well-managed yard supports healthy plants and discourages pests at the same time.
The University of Tennessee Extension recommends maintaining a 12- to 18-inch bare zone between the foundation and any mulch, plantings, or ground cover.3 The University of Florida Extension adds that mulch within 12 inches of the foundation should be no more than 2 inches deep to reduce the risk of creating a bridge for termites.4
This clearance zone serves three purposes: it removes cover that insects and rodents use to approach the foundation undetected, it allows you to see the foundation for inspection, and it reduces moisture against the structure. Gravel or crushed stone in the clearance zone is a lower-risk alternative to mulch, since it drains quickly and does not retain moisture the way organic materials do.
Pull mulch back from the foundation wall. Trim or relocate any plantings that sit directly against the house. Keep this zone clear of leaf debris and organic matter. If you use mulch in adjacent beds, maintain a maximum depth of 2 to 3 inches and avoid contact with siding or wood trim.
Dense vegetation against the house creates a sheltered, humid corridor that insects and rodents use for cover. Branches touching the roof give squirrels, raccoons, and roof rats a direct bridge to the attic. Overgrown ground cover hides pest activity and makes inspection difficult.1, 2
Keep shrubs trimmed so they do not touch the house. Maintain at least 12 to 18 inches of clearance between the plant canopy and the exterior wall. Prune the interior of dense shrubs to improve air circulation and reduce hiding places.
Cut back any branches that touch or overhang the roof, siding, or gutters. This eliminates the travel paths wildlife use to reach upper-story entry points. It also reduces leaf debris in gutters, which contributes to moisture and standing water problems.
Thick ground cover like ivy, vinca, or dense ornamental grasses can harbor rodents and insects close to the foundation. If you use ground cover, keep it well away from the house and inspect the area underneath periodically.
>Keep grass mowed to a moderate height. Overgrown grass, especially near the foundation, provides cover for insects and tick habitat. The University of Minnesota Extension recommends a mowing height of 3 to 4 inches for a healthy lawn that also discourages pest harborage.<1
Firewood stacked against the house is one of the most common pest-attraction mistakes. It provides food for termites and carpenter ants, shelter for rodents and spiders, and moisture retention against the foundation. The same applies to scrap lumber, old pallets, and compost bins placed too close to the structure.
Store at least 20 feet from the home, elevated off the ground on a rack or pallets. Only bring inside the amount you plan to burn that day. Inspect each piece for insects before carrying it in.5
Store unused lumber and building materials away from the house and off the ground. Aging wood is increasingly attractive to subterranean termites. Remove old stumps, buried wood scraps, and decaying timber from the yard when practical.
Place compost bins at least 10 feet from the foundation. Manage the pile actively (turning, moisture balance) to reduce rodent interest. Bag and remove leaf piles and yard debris promptly rather than letting them accumulate near the house.
Items stored against the house, under decks, or in dense vegetation create undisturbed harborage. Move items periodically, inspect underneath them, and avoid creating permanent, covered spaces where pests can nest undetected.
Moisture is the single most consistent pest attractant. Termites follow it to the foundation. Mosquitoes breed in it. Rodents need it to survive. The EPA and CDC both identify standing water elimination as a primary component of integrated pest and mosquito management.6, 7
Mosquitoes can lay eggs in as little as a bottle cap of standing water and can develop from egg to biting adult in as few as five days. A weekly yard check to dump, drain, or cover any water-holding container is one of the most effective prevention steps available.
Empty flowerpot saucers, buckets, tires, tarps, children's toys, wheelbarrows, and any container that collects rainwater at least weekly. Turn containers upside down when not in use. Drill drainage holes in the bottom of outdoor recycling bins.
Clean gutters regularly to prevent water from pooling. Extend downspouts to direct water at least 3 to 4 feet away from the foundation. Clogged gutters also cause fascia rot, which creates entry points for pests.
The ground should slope away from the foundation so water drains naturally. Fill in low spots where water pools after rain. Fix dripping outdoor faucets and irrigation leaks. Overwatering the lawn or garden creates saturated soil that attracts both termites and mosquitoes.4
Change the water in bird baths at least once a week. If you have a pond or water garden, stock it with mosquitofish or use mosquito dunks containing Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis), a naturally occurring bacterium that targets mosquito larvae without harming other wildlife.
Anything edible left accessible outdoors will eventually attract something. The EPA identifies food source elimination as a core component of the IPM approach for both insects and rodents.6
Store pet food in sealed, rigid containers. Bring food bowls inside at night. Outdoor feeding stations attract raccoons, opossums, rats, and mice. If you must feed pets outside, pick up uneaten food within 30 minutes.
Use trash cans with tight-fitting lids. Rinse food containers before recycling. Keep bins away from the house when possible. Secure lids against raccoons with bungee cords or locking mechanisms if they are a problem in your area.
Pick up fallen fruit promptly. Rotting fruit on the ground attracts wasps, yellow jackets, ants, and rodents. If you have a vegetable garden, harvest regularly and remove plant debris at the end of the season.
Spilled birdseed beneath feeders is a reliable food source for mice, rats, and squirrels. If rodent activity is present, consider removing feeders temporarily or using feeders designed to reduce spillage. Position feeders well away from the house.

Even without control over the landscaping, you can manage the food and water factors on your patio, balcony, or shared yard space. Store trash in sealed containers. Eliminate standing water in saucers and containers. Bring pet food inside. Keep your immediate area clean of debris.
If the property has overgrown vegetation against the building, poor drainage near the foundation, or uncollected yard debris, document the conditions and request maintenance from your landlord in writing. These are property management issues, not tenant responsibilities.
Deep mulch touching the siding or foundation creates a moist, sheltered environment that termites, ants, and earwigs use as a staging area. Maintain the clearance zone and keep mulch at 2 to 3 inches maximum.3, 4
Convenient, but it provides food, shelter, and moisture for termites, carpenter ants, and rodents in direct contact with the structure. Move it to at least 20 feet away and elevate it off the ground.5
Sprinkler systems that spray the foundation or create saturated soil near the house attract both termites and mosquitoes. Adjust heads to keep water away from the structure and reduce irrigation to what plants actually need.
Clogged gutters cause water overflow that saturates the soil at the foundation line, attracts pests, and can rot fascia boards. Keep gutters clean and extend downspouts to move water away from the house.
Pet food left outside after dark is a reliable attractant for raccoons, opossums, skunks, rats, and mice. The solution is simple: bring it inside before dusk.
