The basics

Lighter than cans, tougher than pouches.

Emergency water cartons use multi-layer Tetra Pak-style construction: paperboard, aluminum foil, and polyethylene bonded together to create a container that blocks light, oxygen, and moisture. The result is a shelf-stable water package that holds 8 to 12 ounces per unit, stacks efficiently, and weighs less than an equivalent volume in cans. Most brands rate their cartons at five years from the manufacture date.

Cartons occupy a middle ground in the emergency water format spectrum. They hold more water per unit than mylar pouches (8 to 12 ounces vs. 4 ounces), weigh less than cans, and resist puncture better than thin mylar. They do not match the 50-year shelf life of sealed cans, but they outlast plastic bottles by a wide margin and store more compactly thanks to their rectangular shape.

Like pouches and cans, cartons are a convenience format. For large-volume home water storage, filling your own food-grade containers from the tap remains the most cost-effective approach. Cartons are best suited for go-bags, vehicle kits, workplace storage, and as a portable supplement to your primary water supply.

How many to stock

24 to 32 cartons per person covers a 72-hour drinking water baseline. A case of 24 is a reasonable unit for one go-bag or vehicle kit. At $15 to $25 per case, the cost is comparable to mylar pouches with the advantage of higher per-unit volume.

Storage and rotation

Store in a cool, dark, dry location. The multi-layer construction is more robust than plastic bottles but can still be punctured or crushed if stored carelessly. Do not stack heavy items on top of cartons. Check the manufacture date on the carton and rotate at five years. Discard any carton that is punctured, bulging, or shows signs of damage.

Brand does not matter much

Several brands sell emergency water cartons, and the differences between them are minimal. What matters is the Tetra Pak-style multi-layer construction and a clearly printed manufacture date. Verify the shelf life claim on the packaging and confirm the per-carton volume before purchasing.

Where to buy

Stackable, portable, five-year water.

Search for emergency water cartons or water boxes on Amazon. Check manufacture dates on arrival. Any multi-layer carton with a printed shelf life works.
