The basics

Portable water you do not have to think about.

Mylar emergency water pouches are individually sealed, single-serving packets of purified water designed for long-term storage without any container or treatment. Each pouch typically holds 4.225 fluid ounces (125 mL) of water, sealed in a durable mylar-lined foil packet with a five-year shelf life from the manufacture date. You tear open the pouch and drink. No treatment, no filtering, no container to maintain.

Their primary advantage is portability and simplicity. Drop a stack of pouches into a go-bag, a vehicle kit, a workplace desk drawer, or a locker, and you have drinkable water ready without any setup. They do not leak, do not require rotation as frequently as filled containers, and conform to irregular spaces better than rigid bottles or jugs.

The tradeoff is volume and cost per ounce. At roughly 4 ounces per pouch, you need a lot of pouches to cover a meaningful water supply. A 72-hour kit for one person would require 24 to 32 pouches just for drinking water, and that still falls short of the one gallon per day recommended for drinking and basic hygiene. Pouches work best as a portable supplement to your primary home water storage, not as a replacement for it.

How many to stock

24 to 32 pouches per person per 72-hour kit is a reasonable starting point. A case of 50 or 96 pouches covers one to two kits. If you stock pouches in both a home go-bag and a vehicle kit, plan for two cases per person.

Storage and rotation

Store in a cool, dark location away from sharp objects that could puncture the pouch. Heat and UV exposure degrade the mylar over time. Vehicle storage is acceptable but shortens effective life. Rotate vehicle-stored pouches every two to three years. For indoor storage, the five-year shelf life is reliable. Check the manufacture date on the pouch, not the purchase date, when planning rotation.

USCG-approved brands

SOS Food Lab and Datrex are two commonly available brands that carry U.S. Coast Guard approval for marine life raft use, which is the most stringent standard for emergency water packaging. Generic pouches work as well, but USCG-approved products provide an extra layer of confidence in manufacturing and shelf life claims.

Where to buy

Check the manufacture date.

Search for emergency water pouches on Amazon or from preparedness retailers. SOS and Datrex are USCG-approved options. Check the manufacture date on the pouch when received and mark your rotation calendar.
