A fire extinguisher is designed for one thing: a small, contained fire in its earliest moments. A wastebasket. A stovetop pan. A spark that caught a shop rag. If you reach the extinguisher within the first 30 to 60 seconds and the fire is still small, contained, and not producing heavy smoke, a fire extinguisher can end the situation before it becomes a crisis.
But the NFPA is clear about the limits: a fire extinguisher is not a substitute for the fire department, and trying to fight a fire you cannot control is one of the most dangerous decisions a person can make in a home emergency.[1]
Leave the house and call 911 if any of these are true
The fire is larger than a wastebasket or is spreading.
The room is filling with smoke. Smoke kills more people than fire does.
You do not have the right type of extinguisher for the fire.
The fire could block your only exit if it grows.
You have already used one extinguisher and the fire is still burning.
You have any doubt at all about whether you can control it.
The NFPA recommends using a fire extinguisher only when the fire is confined to a small area and is not growing, everyone else is already out of the building, you have the correct extinguisher, and you have a clear escape route behind you.[1]
Every section below assumes you have already made this decision. The extinguisher matters only after the decision to stay is justified. If the answer is "leave," nothing else on this page matters. Get out, close the door behind you, and call 911 from outside.
What to buy
Fire extinguishers are classified by the type of fire they can suppress. Using the wrong class on a fire can make it worse. Water on a grease fire spatters burning oil. Water on an electrical fire creates an electrocution risk. The classification system exists to prevent these mistakes.[2]
Class A
Ordinary combustibles
Wood, paper, fabric, cardboard, most plastics. The most common type of household fire. An overturned candle, a wastebasket, a curtain that caught a space heater.
Class B
Flammable liquids and gases
Gasoline, oil, grease, paint, propane, alcohol. Common in garages and workshops. A small grease fire on the stovetop is a Class B fire. Never use water on a Class B fire; it spreads the burning liquid.
Class C
Electrical fires
Fires involving live electrical equipment: wiring, outlets, appliances, circuit breakers. The "C" rating means the extinguishing agent does not conduct electricity. Once you unplug the appliance or kill the circuit, a Class C fire becomes a Class A or B fire depending on what is burning.
Class K
Cooking oils and fats
Commercial deep fryers and high-temperature cooking. NFPA 10 requires Class K extinguishers in commercial kitchens.[2] For home kitchens, a standard ABC extinguisher handles most cooking fires. For a small grease fire, a metal lid slid over the pan is often the fastest and safest response. Never throw water on a grease fire.
A multipurpose ABC dry chemical extinguisher covers all three residential fire classes. It is the default recommendation from the NFPA for home use. When in doubt, ABC is the correct choice.[1]
Look for a rating of at least 2-A:10-B:C. The numbers indicate capacity: 2-A means it can handle the equivalent of 2.5 gallons of water on a Class A fire; 10-B means it covers 10 square feet of a burning liquid surface. For most homes, a 5-pound ABC extinguisher is the right balance of effectiveness and weight. Heavier units suppress more fire but are harder to handle, especially for smaller adults.
How to use it
PASS is the standard four-step method taught by the NFPA, OSHA, and fire departments everywhere. Learn it now, before you need it. A fire extinguisher empties in 8 to 25 seconds depending on size. There is no time to read instructions during a fire.[1]
Hold the extinguisher upright with the nozzle pointed away from you. Pull the pin at the top of the handle. This releases the locking mechanism. Some models have a tamper seal that breaks when you pull the pin.
Point the nozzle or hose at the base of the fire, not at the flames. The base is where the fuel is. Spraying the flames does almost nothing; the agent needs to reach the material that is actually burning. Stand 6 to 8 feet back.
Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly to discharge the agent. Release the lever to stop the flow. This matters because the extinguisher empties quickly and you may need to reposition.
Sweep the nozzle back and forth across the base of the fire. Cover the entire burning area. As the fire diminishes, you can move closer carefully. Keep your back toward an exit at all times. If the fire reignites or grows despite your efforts, stop. Leave the house and call 911.
Even if you successfully put the fire out, call the fire department. They can inspect for hidden embers in walls, ceilings, or insulation that could reignite hours later. After any use, no matter how brief, the extinguisher must be professionally recharged or replaced before it can be used again.
Where to put them
The NFPA recommends at least one extinguisher on every level of the home, placed along normal paths of travel and near exits. The principle is simple: you should be able to grab the extinguisher while moving toward safety, not while reaching over a fire to get to it.[2]
Kitchen: Near the kitchen exit, not directly above or behind the stove. You want to grab it while backing away from a fire, not while reaching over one.
Garage: Near the door that leads into the house. Garages contain gasoline, paint, solvents, and power tools, all of which are ignition risks.
Each additional floor: Near the stairway, in plain view. A fire on any floor should have an extinguisher within reach before you would need to change floors to get one.
Workshop, laundry room, or utility room: Near the exit of any room with a dryer, furnace, water heater, or power equipment.
Mount the extinguisher on the wall with its bracket so the top of the unit is no more than 5 feet above the floor and the bottom is at least 4 inches off the floor. This height range keeps it accessible to most adults, visible, and out of the way of foot traffic. Wall brackets come with most extinguishers and require two screws.[2]
Do not store extinguishers in cabinets, closets, or behind furniture. An extinguisher that is invisible is an extinguisher that will not be used. If you are concerned about aesthetics, recessed wall cabinets with clear doors are available, but an exposed bracket on the wall is fine. The goal is speed, not decoration.
Keeping it ready
A fire extinguisher that has lost pressure, has a corroded valve, or has powder that has settled and caked will not work when you need it. A quick monthly visual check prevents this.
Glance at the pressure gauge. If the needle is in the green zone, the extinguisher is charged. If it is in the red, it needs service or replacement. Confirm the pin is in place and the tamper seal is intact. Check for visible damage: dents, corrosion, a cracked hose. Confirm it is still in its designated location and not blocked by furniture or stored items. This takes less than a minute per extinguisher.[2]
NFPA 10 calls for annual maintenance that includes examining all mechanical parts, the extinguishing agent, and the expelling mechanism.[2] In commercial settings, a certified technician performs this. For residential use, a thorough annual check of pressure, hose condition, pin, seal, and overall physical condition is the standard most fire departments recommend.
Disposable (non-rechargeable) extinguishers should be replaced every 12 years or sooner if the gauge reads low or the unit shows damage. Rechargeable extinguishers can be professionally serviced: NFPA 10 requires a 6-year internal examination and a 12-year hydrostatic pressure test for stored-pressure dry chemical units.[2] For most households, a disposable ABC unit costs $20 to $60 and replacing it every 10 to 12 years is simpler and cheaper than professional servicing.

Mistake
Throwing water on a grease fire
Water on burning cooking oil causes a violent steam explosion that spatters flaming grease across the kitchen. For a small stovetop grease fire, slide a metal lid over the pan and turn off the heat. If the fire has spread beyond the pan, use an ABC extinguisher aimed at the base. Never carry a burning pan to the sink.
Mistake
Aiming at the flames instead of the base
The flames are a symptom. The fuel at the base is the problem. Spraying agent into the flames passes through them and lands behind the fire, accomplishing nothing. Aim low, at the material that is actually burning.

Mounting the extinguisher behind the stove
If the fire is on the stove, you should not have to reach over it to get the extinguisher. Mount it near the kitchen exit so you grab it on your way out, not on your way in.

Never checking the pressure gauge
An extinguisher that has lost pressure will not discharge. A five-second glance at the gauge once a month is all it takes. If the needle is in the red, replace or recharge the unit immediately.

Fighting a fire without an exit behind you
If the fire grows and you are between the fire and the door, you are trapped. Always position yourself so the exit is behind you. If the fire is between you and the exit, do not fight it. Leave by another route.

Teaching young children to use a fire extinguisher
The NFPA specifically recommends against this. Children should be taught to get out of the house and go to the meeting point, not to fight fires. An extinguisher is an adult tool for an adult decision.[1]
