Fiber, meat, and manure that feeds the pasture back. Sheep ask less daily attention than dairy animals, but the fence and the parasite plan have to be right from day one, or the flock pays for it.
What this is
A small flock of sheep produces one or more of three things: wool, meat, and land improvement. Wool breeds need annual shearing and reward the keeper with a fiber crop whether or not they are ever sold for meat. Hair breeds shed naturally, need no shearing, and are typically kept for meat. Dual-purpose breeds split the difference. The right choice depends on what the household actually wants out of the flock, not which breed looks best in a photo.[1]
Good pasture supplies most of a flock's feed for the majority of the year, with hay or grain needed only in winter, drought, or during late pregnancy. Sheep manure is an excellent soil fertilizer, and rotating a flock through pasture ahead of a garden or crop planting builds fertility without buying a thing. The honest tradeoff: sheep are lower daily-attention animals than a milking goat or a dairy cow, but they are herd animals through and through, the fence has to hold on the first try, and internal parasites are the single management challenge that separates thriving flocks from struggling ones.
Choosing a breed
This is the first decision and it shapes everything downstream: whether you shear, what you sell, and how much heat and humidity the flock can handle.
No shearing required
Shed their coat naturally. Bred for meat, not fiber. Better parasite resistance than most wool breeds, and more heat-tolerant in the Southeast. The fastest-growing segment of the U.S. sheep industry.[1]
Common breeds: Katahdin, Dorper, St. Croix, Royal White, Barbados Blackbelly.
Annual shearing required
Produce a fiber crop that can be sold raw, processed, or used at home. Must be shorn once a year; an unshorn wool sheep in summer heat is a welfare problem. Fiber quality varies widely by breed, from fine Merino spinning wool to coarser rug-grade fleeces.
Common breeds: Merino (fine wool), Rambouillet, Shetland, Corriedale, Romney, Icelandic.
Fiber and meat
A practical middle ground: decent wool, decent meat conformation, and generally hardy. A good fit for a household that wants a fiber crop without optimizing exclusively for fleece quality or carcass weight.
Common breeds: Polypay, Columbia, Suffolk (primarily meat but often crossed), Hampshire.
For beginners: hair sheep (Katahdin in particular) are the most forgiving starting point. No shearing logistics, better parasite tolerance, and a strong market for the lambs. If fiber is the goal, Shetland sheep are small, hardy, and produce a fleece that hand-spinners actively seek out.
Space and shelter
Stocking rate
A conservative starting point for good-quality improved pasture with rotational grazing is two to four ewes per acre during the growing season. Six to eight sheep equal roughly one animal unit (the forage equivalent of one cow and calf). The number a property can actually carry depends on pasture quality, rainfall, growing-season length, and whether hay is brought in for winter. Start conservative. It is far easier to add animals than to recover overgrazed pasture.[6]
Shelter
Sheep do not need a heated barn. A three-sided run-in shelter, open to the south or east, provides adequate protection from wind, rain, and direct sun. Plan for 10 to 12 square feet of sheltered space per adult animal. The shelter floor should be well-drained; a thick layer of straw bedding keeps the flock clean and dry. A fully enclosed space is needed only for lambing, where 5x5-foot individual lambing pens (called jugs) allow a ewe and her newborn lambs to bond for the first 24 to 48 hours.[1]
Water
An adult sheep drinks one to four gallons of water per day depending on temperature, lactation status, and whether the pasture is lush or dry. Clean, unfrozen water must be available at all times. In winter, a heated stock-tank de-icer prevents the water from freezing over and is one of the cheapest investments that prevents the most common winter health problem: dehydration.
Zoning
Most municipalities and counties regulate livestock through zoning: minimum lot size, setback distances from property lines and neighbors, and sometimes a cap on animals per acre. HOA covenants can add further restrictions regardless of county zoning. Call your local zoning office before fencing goes up or animals arrive.
The infrastructure
A 7- to 8-wire high-tensile electric fence around 48 inches tall is a standard, well-tested design for holding both sheep and cattle, and it doubles as predator deterrence. Post spacing of 40 to 50 feet is workable on level ground when wires are kept properly tensioned.[3]
Barbed wire tears wool and causes cuts and infections when sheep push against a fence line. Smooth high-tensile wire or woven wire contains sheep with far less injury risk. Woven wire with one or two hot strands at the top is the heaviest-duty option for high-predator-pressure areas.
Strong corner and gate assemblies, not the wire itself, are what actually hold fence tension over years. Overbuild the corners and brace assemblies. That is where a fence fails first, and a failed corner drops every wire in the run.
Temporary electric netting or polywire divides the perimeter into smaller paddocks for rotational grazing. Moving a flock through three to six paddocks on a rotation of days to weeks prevents overgrazing, improves soil health, and is one of the most effective non-chemical tools for reducing internal parasite exposure.[4]
Budget for it before the sheep arrive. A 7-strand high-tensile electric perimeter runs roughly half the material and labor cost of an equivalent woven-wire fence. Either way, the perimeter fence is the single largest startup expense and the one that should not be deferred or built to the minimum.
Nutrition
Good pasture is the foundation. During the growing season, a well-managed mixed-grass-and-clover pasture supplies the majority of a sheep's nutritional needs without supplementation. The gaps come in winter, drought, late pregnancy, and early lactation.[1]
Hay
Most small-flock owners plan for four to six months of hay feeding per year, depending on climate and growing season length. Good-quality grass hay or grass-legume mix is the standard. An adult ewe consumes roughly 3 to 5 pounds of hay per day when pasture is unavailable. Budget hay before winter, not during it; buying hay in January costs significantly more than buying it at first cutting in June.
Grain supplementation
Grain is not routine for most of the year. The times it matters: the last four to six weeks of pregnancy (flushing), early lactation when ewes are nursing twins or triplets, and for fast-growing lambs on a finishing program. A pound to a pound and a half of a commercial sheep grain per ewe per day during late gestation is a common extension recommendation. Do not feed grain formulated for cattle or horses; copper levels safe for those species are toxic to sheep.[1]
Minerals
Free-choice loose mineral formulated specifically for sheep should be available at all times. Sheep are highly sensitive to copper toxicity; never use a cattle or goat mineral, which may contain lethal copper levels. A sheep-specific loose mineral and a salt block are the baseline. Selenium supplementation may be needed in selenium-deficient regions (most of the eastern U.S.); check with your local extension office.
Copper toxicity: Sheep accumulate copper in the liver over time, and a sudden release (copper toxicity crisis) can kill quickly with little warning. Never feed cattle or goat feed, cattle minerals, or poultry feed to sheep. If sheep share pasture with goats, use a sheep-safe mineral for the group and supplement goats individually.
Internal parasites, above all the barber pole worm (Haemonchus contortus), are a leading cause of illness and death in sheep and goats. The worm feeds on blood in the abomasum (the stomach), causing anemia severe enough to kill an untreated animal in weeks. It thrives in warm, humid conditions and its larvae can persist on pasture for months, waiting to be ingested during grazing.[2]
Deworming the entire flock on a fixed schedule, the old standard advice, now does more harm than good. It accelerates dewormer resistance in the worm population, and resistant worm populations are already widespread across the southeastern and mid-Atlantic states. The current extension-recommended approach is selective deworming using the FAMACHA system: scoring the color of each animal's lower-eyelid membrane on a 1-to-5 anemia scale, and treating only the animals that score a 4 or 5. This preserves a pool of drug-susceptible worms on the pasture (carried by the untreated, healthy animals), which slows the development of resistance and keeps the dewormers working longer.[2][5]
FAMACHA scoring requires brief training (typically a half-day workshop) available through most state extension offices, which provide a laminated scoring card. Combine it with rotational grazing, keeping pasture height above 3 to 4 inches (larvae concentrate in the lowest 2 inches of grass), and resting paddocks for 30 to 60 days between grazing passes for the strongest non-chemical layer of control.[4]
Quarantine new arrivals. Any sheep brought onto the property should be kept in a separate pen for two to three weeks, dewormed on arrival, and FAMACHA-scored before joining the flock. Introducing a new animal without quarantine is how resistant parasite strains enter a clean property.
Flock health
The only universally recommended vaccine for sheep is CD/T: protection against enterotoxemia (Clostridium perfringens types C and D) and tetanus. Enterotoxemia can kill fast-growing lambs suddenly, and tetanus enters through wounds or castration sites.
Schedule: Ewes receive an annual booster 3 to 4 weeks before lambing, so antibodies pass through colostrum. Lambs from vaccinated dams get their first CD/T at 6 to 8 weeks, with a booster 3 to 4 weeks later. Lambs from unvaccinated dams start at 3 to 4 weeks.[7]
Hoof trimming two to four times per year keeps feet healthy. Foot rot and foot scald are bacterial infections that cause lameness and spread through the flock in wet conditions.
Signs: Limping, holding a foot off the ground, foul smell from the hoof. Catch and treat early; advanced foot rot requires extended antibiotic treatment and can become chronic. A foot bath with zinc sulfate at the entrance to the handling area after trimming is a common preventive measure.
Coyotes are the primary sheep predator in most of the United States. Domestic dogs running loose are a close second and often worse, since they kill for sport rather than food, leaving multiple animals injured or dead.
Layers of protection: A properly electrified perimeter fence is the first line. Bringing the flock near the house at night reduces risk significantly. A livestock guardian animal (dog, donkey, or llama) adds a deterrent layer that works around the clock. Of these, a guardian dog raised with the flock from puppyhood is the most effective but also the highest commitment.
Not every veterinarian treats livestock. Large-animal and mixed-practice vets are less common than small-animal clinics, especially in suburban areas.
Before you buy sheep: Find a large-animal vet willing to take on a small flock and establish the relationship before an emergency forces the search. Ask about after-hours availability for lambing season. Some states also have small-ruminant extension specialists who can help with flock health planning.
The big event
Gestation in sheep runs approximately 147 days (about five months). Most small-flock owners breed in the fall for spring lambing, which puts birth during warmer weather and aligns lamb growth with the flush of spring pasture. Everything a keeper does in the months before lambing, vaccination timing, nutrition, shelter prep, has this event as its target.[8]
Before lambing
Increase the ewe's grain ration during the last 4 to 6 weeks of pregnancy, when 70 percent of fetal growth occurs. Administer the annual CD/T booster 3 to 4 weeks before the due date. Prepare lambing pens (jugs): clean, dry, 5x5 feet, with fresh straw bedding. Have iodine for navel dipping, dry towels, and a heat lamp on hand.[8]
During lambing
Most ewes lamb without assistance, especially experienced mothers. Active labor (visible straining) should produce a lamb within 30 to 45 minutes. If the ewe has been straining hard for an hour with no progress, intervention or veterinary help may be needed. After birth, make sure each lamb nurses colostrum within the first one to two hours; colostrum delivers the antibodies that protect against disease in the first weeks of life. Dip the navel stump in iodine to prevent infection.
After lambing
Keep the ewe and lambs in the jug for 24 to 48 hours to ensure bonding, especially for first-time mothers or ewes with twins. Watch for signs of rejected lambs (the ewe pushes a lamb away or refuses to let it nurse). Ewes nursing twins or triplets need significantly more feed than those nursing singles; increase hay and grain accordingly.
Tail docking and castration
Most wool-breed lambs have their tails docked within the first week to prevent fecal buildup and flystrike. Ram lambs not kept for breeding are castrated at the same time. Both procedures should be performed early (under two weeks of age) and with tetanus antitoxin if the ewe was not vaccinated pre-lambing. Hair-breed lambs with naturally short tails typically do not require docking.
Fiber
Wool sheep grow fleece continuously and do not shed it. An unshorn sheep in summer heat suffers: the wool traps body heat, attracts moisture, harbors external parasites, and eventually becomes so heavy and matted that the animal cannot move or lie down comfortably. Annual shearing is a welfare requirement, not just a fiber harvest.
Timing
Most flocks are shorn in late winter or early spring, before lambing and before warm weather arrives. Shearing before lambing makes it easier for lambs to find the udder and keeps the barn cleaner.
Finding a shearer
Professional shearers are in high demand and short supply. Book months in advance, especially for small flocks (many shearers prioritize large operations). Your state sheep association, extension office, or local fiber guild can help locate shearers working in your area. Some shearers will take small flocks if several neighbors combine their animals into one shearing day.
What to do with the fleece
Sell raw fleeces to hand-spinners (local fiber festivals are the best market for small quantities). Send fleeces to a fiber mill for processing into roving or yarn. Use it as garden mulch (wool decomposes slowly and suppresses weeds). Or compost it. Not every fleece is worth processing; the market value depends entirely on breed, cleanliness, and preparation.
The rhythm
This calendar assumes fall breeding for spring lambing, the most common schedule for small flocks in the eastern and central United States. Adjust timing for your climate and breeding season.[8]
Late winter / Early spring
Shear ewes before lambing. Administer pre-lambing CD/T booster. Prepare lambing pens. Lamb, dock, and castrate as needed. Begin FAMACHA scoring as temperatures warm. Increase ewe nutrition for lactation.
Spring / Summer
Move the flock onto spring pasture. Begin rotational grazing. Vaccinate lambs (first CD/T at 6-8 weeks, booster 3-4 weeks later). FAMACHA-score every two to three weeks during warm months. Wean lambs at 60 to 90 days. Trim hooves. Market or process surplus lambs.
Fall
Flush ewes (increase nutrition 2-3 weeks before breeding to improve conception rates). Introduce the ram. Breeding season for most breeds runs September through December. FAMACHA-score and treat as needed before breeding. Stockpile pasture or purchase hay for winter feeding. Confirm hay supply before prices rise.
Winter
Feed hay daily. Ensure unfrozen water at all times. Increase grain for ewes in the last 4-6 weeks of pregnancy. Check shelter bedding and drainage. Repair fencing before spring turnout. Order shearing date. Prepare lambing supplies. The quietest season on paper, but the planning done now determines how lambing goes.
What goes wrong
A lone sheep is a stressed, constantly-calling sheep that may refuse to eat. Herd animals need a herd, even a small one of three.
A fence that barely holds sheep rarely stops predators either. Corners and gate posts are not the place to cut cost. A failed fence in the first month is more expensive than overbuilding it once.
Blanket scheduled deworming is exactly what has driven parasite drug resistance across the industry. Check before you treat. FAMACHA scoring takes minutes per animal.
Copper levels safe for cattle are lethal to sheep over time. The toxicity builds silently in the liver and can kill suddenly. Always use a mineral formulated specifically for sheep.
An unshorn wool sheep in summer heat is a welfare problem, not just a missed fiber harvest. Book a shearer months in advance; they fill up fast.
Introducing new sheep without a two-to-three-week quarantine and deworming is the primary way resistant parasites, foot rot, and contagious diseases enter a clean flock.
