What four AI systems got wrong.

This section documents the method behind the list. It is included for readers who want to know why they should trust a sequence over a ranking, and it stands on its own.

The experiment

Before writing this list, we ran a test. Four leading AI systems, ChatGPT, Grok, Perplexity, and Gemini, were each given an identical prompt: produce a one-hundred-item sequenced acquisition list for an ordinary household, under the same calm, non-fear-based constraints this site works to, without being told which site was asking, and forbidden from naming brands. Their outputs were compared for convergence and for failure patterns, and one of them was then asked to critique our own first draft. What came back reshaped this document, and the findings are worth publishing on their own.

All four systems failed on fire and carbon monoxide sequencing. One placed a fuel-burning stove at item 39 and the carbon monoxide alarm at item 42, three positions after the hazard it detects. One omitted smoke and CO detection entirely, from a hundred-item list. One recommended a kerosene heater and a charcoal grill without an outdoor-only qualifier. And one described a butane stove as suitable for safe indoor cooking, in a list that contained no carbon monoxide alarm anywhere. This is the finding that justifies the premise of the entire document: sequence is a safety property, and it is the property the genre gets wrong by default.

All four independently said one hundred items is padded. Asked where the honest stopping point falls, the four systems estimated roughly seventy to eighty-five items. Our own count agrees: about eighty-two of the entries above apply to every household, and the rest are conditional on who lives there. We kept the number and made the padding visible instead of hiding it, by marking conditionals inline and telling readers to skip what does not apply.

All four omitted infants, children, and pets. Every one. Both categories appear on the Ready.gov and Red Cross foundational checklists, and both vanished from every long-form list the systems produced. Items 19, 20, and 28 exist because of this finding.

Two of four independently named the plug-in wattage meter as the most overlooked item in preparedness. That was the strongest convergence signal in the entire exercise, it does not appear on any consumer list we reviewed, and it sits at item 63.

One system fabricated statistics. It produced a precise-sounding figure, that a given tier addressed "98% of all historically recorded emergency disruptions," attached authoritative-looking citations that did not support the claim, and cited preparedness retailers as sources. We flag this not to score points against a tool but because it is the sharpest available illustration of why every number in this document was checked against a primary source rather than generated.

Under pressure to fill slots, the systems reverted to fear. Asked to avoid collapse narratives, one system nonetheless rebuilt a civil-disorder storyline in its later tiers, populating them with security hardware the prompt had excluded. When a list has slots to fill and nothing true left to say, it reaches for fear, and that is as true of human-written lists as of generated ones. It is the reason this list ends with a rotation calendar, a neighbor, and a walk-through instead of a tenth tier of hardware.

What changed under critique

The draft that became this document was then put through the same treatment it gives its own items: adversarial review, with the objections kept. Among the corrections that survived into this version: the food arithmetic in tier four was wrong and is now right, and the entry says so. Stored water moved ahead of stored food. Printed document copies moved ahead of the safe that holds them. The backup drive became an off-site backup with a tested restore. FRS and GMRS radios were separated after being wrongly treated as interchangeable. The fan entry gained its federal temperature limit. A generic twelve-volt cooler was replaced with medication-appropriate cold storage on a pharmacist's instructions. The casual gas shutoff tool was removed entirely, because gas is not a casual system. A claim that heat outkills cold was replaced with the honest statement that federal datasets disagree. And a reference in an earlier draft to a water crisis was corrected to Jackson, Mississippi.

Some criticisms were heard and rejected, and those decisions are recorded too. We declined to split multi-part entries into one product per line, because that pads a list without adding capability, and said instead, plainly, what a numbered line means. We declined to add water-restoration equipment to tier eight, because drying out a house is recovery work with its own guidance. And we kept the title at one hundred, with the conditional architecture doing the honesty work the number alone cannot.

Why publish the method

Because the method is the argument. Any list can assert that its order matters. This one can show what happens when the order is generated without care: stoves before alarms, infants forgotten, statistics invented, fear filling the gaps. The sequence above was built to survive exactly that critique, every item carries the strongest objection we could find against it, and where a future critic finds a better objection, the list should change again. That is what it means for a list to be worth trusting: not that it is finished, but that it knows how it was made.

Deliberately absent

What this list leaves out.

A list defines itself as much by what it leaves out as by what it includes, and these exclusions were argued, not assumed.

Firearms and ammunition. Not on this list. Disaster mortality is driven by hypothermia, hyperthermia, dehydration, carbon monoxide, waterborne illness, trauma, and unmanaged chronic conditions. It is not driven by the scenario firearms address. Households that want them have their own reasons and their own sources.

Gas masks, hazmat suits, and potassium iodide. Low-probability events, strict shelf lives, and training requirements that a purchase does not satisfy. A respirator at item 79 is a particulate filter and nothing more, and we say so there.

Candles and oil lamps. Open flame during power loss is a documented cause of fatal home fires, per NFPA data discussed at item 2, and the U.S. Fire Administration's guidance is to use flashlights instead. Item 2 does the job on a battery.

Precious metals and barter goods. They assume a duration and a breakdown this list does not. Cash works at the open gas station, and a savings account works for the far more common financial emergency.

Twenty-five-year food buckets, grain mills, pressure canners, seed vaults, rainwater systems, and hand well pumps. All legitimate, none of them preparedness in the sense this list means. These are food and water self-reliance, which is a different capability built on a different timescale. This list ends where those begin.

Tourniquets and wound closure. Discussed at item 82. Tourniquets follow training rather than preceding it. Wound closure at home is not a thing we will recommend.

Home security hardware and perimeter alarms. Reasonable household purchases with their own logic, and not sequenced here. Every AI-generated list we tested rebuilt a civil-disorder narrative in this category even when explicitly told not to, which is a good reason to keep it separate rather than smuggled in.

Pre-assembled kits. Not excluded on principle, and a decent kit beats nothing. We list components because most commercial kits contain a great deal of one thing and very little of the rest.

Sources and verification

Every claim, checked.

Every safety-critical number in this list was checked against a primary source rather than recalled, and the editorial claims that shape the argument were verified separately. Last verified: July 2026. Safety-critical claims are re-verified on the site's standard review cycle.

Safety-critical guidance

  • Smoke alarm placement: NFPA. One on every level including the basement, inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, interconnected preferred.
  • Carbon monoxide alarm placement: CPSC. Battery or battery-backup alarms on every level and outside sleeping areas, interconnected recommended.
  • Generator placement: CDC and CPSC. Outdoors only, more than twenty feet from the home, with exhaust directed away from doors, windows, and vents. Never indoors or in a garage even with doors and windows open.
  • Water quantity and rotation: CDC. At least one gallon per person per day for drinking and sanitation, three-day minimum, two-week goal, more for pregnancy, illness, pets, and hot climates. Replace self-filled water every six months. Observe expiration dates on commercially bottled water.
  • Water rationing: Ready.gov. Never ration drinking water unless instructed by authorities.
  • Fans in heat: EPA and CDC. Do not rely on electric fans for cooling when indoor temperature reaches the mid-nineties, as fans will not prevent heat-related illness and can raise core temperature.
  • Food safety during outages: USDA FSIS and FDA. A refrigerator holds safe temperature roughly four hours, a full freezer roughly forty-eight, a half-full freezer roughly twenty-four. Discard perishables held above 40°F for four hours or more. Never taste food to determine safety.
  • Emergency communication: Ready.gov and FEMA. Text rather than call during emergencies, since texts often get through congested networks and leave lines open for responders. Designate an out-of-area contact.

Editorial claims and where they come from

  • Candles and outage fires (items 2 and exclusions): NFPA fire statistics attribute an average of over 7,000 home structure fires per year to candles in recent reporting periods, roughly twenty per day. In an NFPA review of 117 fatal home candle fires, the home was without electrical power in about one quarter of the fires, accounting for about one third of the deaths, and NFPA identifies candles used for light in the absence of power as posing a particular risk of fatal fire. The U.S. Fire Administration's published guidance is to use flashlights, not candles, during a power outage.
  • Cooking as the leading cause of home fires (item 6): NFPA home fire cause data.
  • Heat versus cold mortality (item 45): Contested between federal datasets, and the entry says so. National Weather Service event-based counts have heat leading weather fatalities in most recent years. CDC National Center for Health Statistics death-certificate analysis attributed roughly twice as many deaths to excessive cold as to excessive heat over the most cited study period. Both methods are acknowledged undercounts. The list reports the disagreement rather than selecting a side.
  • Water damage versus fire claim frequency (items 71 and 91, tier eight introduction): Insurance Information Institute claims data. Approximately one in sixty insured homes files a water damage or freezing claim per year, against approximately one in four hundred twenty-five for fire and lightning. Fire remains the most severe claim category by average cost.
  • Social connection and disaster outcomes (item 99): A consistent finding across the disaster research literature, including post-event studies of heat waves, hurricanes, and infrastructure failures, that social ties and neighbor check-ins predict survival and recovery. Stated as a research pattern rather than a single statistic.
  • Falls during outages (item 1): Stated as "among the most common injuries," a deliberate softening from an earlier draft that claimed a ranking we could not source.
  • Dental visits (item 83): Stated as "a common reason for emergency room visits," consistent with published emergency department utilization data, without a specific figure.

Deliberately omitted from this document

Reserved for pages where they can be verified, updated, and printed: bleach dosing ratios, water treatment contact times, and specific respirator fit procedures. A list item is the wrong container for a number that must be exactly right.
