The basics

When field strips are not enough.

A lab mail-in water test kit sends your water sample to a certified laboratory for analysis. You receive sample containers and collection instructions, fill them according to the directions, and ship them back in a prepaid mailer. The lab runs your sample through professional-grade analytical equipment and returns a detailed report, typically within 5 to 10 business days. Results include exact concentrations for each tested parameter, compared against EPA standards.

This is the gold standard for water testing. Where a field test strip tells you that a contaminant appears to be present or absent, a lab test tells you exactly how much is there. That precision matters when you need to make treatment decisions, document a well's condition for a property transaction, or confirm a concerning field strip result.

The EPA recommends annual testing for private wells, covering at minimum total coliform bacteria, nitrate, pH, and total dissolved solids. Depending on your location and water source, you may also want to test for arsenic, lead, manganese, iron, hardness, pesticides, or volatile organic compounds. Lab kits are available in tiered panels, from basic well checks starting around $30 to comprehensive panels covering 100 or more parameters for $150 to $200.

How often to test

For private wells, once a year is the EPA's baseline recommendation. Test more frequently if you notice changes in taste, color, or odor, after any work on or near the well, after flooding, or if someone in the household becomes ill. Municipal water users typically do not need lab testing unless they have specific concerns about their plumbing, such as lead from older pipes or fixtures.

Choosing a lab

Look for labs with NELAC or TNI accreditation, which means the facility meets standardized quality and competency requirements. SimpleLab (marketed as Tap Score) and National Testing Laboratories are two well-established certified mail-in services. Your state health department may also maintain a list of approved water testing laboratories. Match the test panel to your water source: well water panels include parameters like bacteria and nitrate that city water panels may omit.

Sample collection matters

Follow the kit's collection instructions precisely. Improper collection is the most common reason for invalid lab results. Use the provided containers, follow the specified wait times for first-draw or flushed samples, and ship within the timeline indicated. Bacteria samples are especially time-sensitive and may need to reach the lab within 24 to 48 hours.

Where to buy

Match the panel to your water source.

SimpleLab (Tap Score) and National Testing Labs both offer well water and city water panels at multiple price points. Basic well checks start around $30. Comprehensive panels covering 100+ parameters run $150 to $200.
