The basics

Scrub to restore, replace when rated.

Ceramic filter candles are cylindrical porous elements that fit inside gravity filter housings. Water passes through the ceramic wall from outside to inside, and the sub-micron pore structure physically blocks bacteria, parasites, and sediment. Some candles include an activated carbon core that also reduces chemical contaminants, chlorine taste, and odor. This is the oldest and most proven gravity filtration technology, used for over a century in systems made by British Berkefeld and Doulton.

The key difference between ceramic candles and block-style elements (like those used in ProOne or older Berkey systems) is maintenance. Ceramic candles are designed to be scrubbed. When flow slows, the outer surface is clogged with trapped sediment. Remove the candle, scrub the outside under clean running water with a non-metallic abrasive pad, and reinstall. This restores flow without reducing the candle's remaining gallon life. It is a feature of the design, not a sign of failure.

When to replace

Replace the candle when it reaches its rated gallon limit, typically 500 to 1,000 gallons depending on the model. Also replace if the ceramic has become noticeably thin from repeated scrubbing, or if you discover any crack of any size. Even a hairline crack allows unfiltered water to bypass the pore structure. Inspect the candle carefully each time you remove it for scrubbing. Hold it up to light if possible. A crack that is invisible to the eye can sometimes be felt by running a fingertip slowly along the surface.

Handling and storage

Ceramic is fragile. Handle candles with care during installation, removal, and scrubbing. A dropped candle may crack internally without visible damage on the outside. Never freeze a ceramic candle, whether in use or in storage. Water trapped in the pores expands when frozen and fractures the ceramic from within. Store spare candles dry, in their original packaging, in a location that stays above freezing.

Candle-style vs. block-style

Ceramic candles (British Berkefeld, Doulton) are cylindrical, hollow, and scrubbable. Block-style elements (ProOne G2.0, older Berkey Black) are solid composite blocks with different maintenance procedures. The two types are not interchangeable. Match your replacement to your specific filter housing and confirm the diameter, length, and mounting type before ordering.

How many to stock

One spare set of candles per gravity system. At $30 to $60 per candle, with most systems using two candles, a spare set runs $60 to $120. Store dry in the original packaging and inspect before installing.
