Total cost for a typical home is $15 to $60.

Can I pest-proof my home if I rent?

Many exclusion steps require no permanent modification: removable door sweeps, copper mesh stuffed into pipe gaps under sinks, sealed food containers, and window screen repair. For structural repairs like foundation cracks, vent screening, or garage door seals, document the issue and request repair from your landlord in writing. In most jurisdictions, pest entry points are a habitability issue.

Should I seal entry points if I already have pests inside?

Address the current population first, either with traps or by hiring a licensed pest management professional, then seal. Closing entry points with pests still inside the structure can trap them in wall cavities where they die and create odor and secondary pest problems.

What is the difference between exclusion and pest control?

Exclusion is prevention: physically sealing the building so pests cannot enter. Pest control is treatment: eliminating pests that are already inside. Both are part of integrated pest management, but exclusion addresses the root cause. A home that is properly sealed rarely needs repeated chemical treatment.

Section 1

Exterior Foundation.

The foundation line is where most pest entry happens. Walk the full perimeter with a flashlight and note every gap larger than 1/16 inch.

Check the sill plate for gaps where the framing meets the foundation
Inspect and seal gaps around all pipes, wires, and conduit entering the home
Seal cracks in the foundation larger than 1/16 inch
Confirm the dryer vent has a functional damper that closes when not in use
Seal gaps around outdoor faucets and hose bibs

Section 2

Doors and Garage.

The threshold beneath exterior doors is the single most overlooked entry point. Check every door, including the one between the garage and the house.

Inspect the garage door bottom seal and side seals for wear

Windows and Screens.

Vents and Roof.

Check soffit vents and panels for damage or gaps
Confirm crawlspace vents have intact screening
Confirm a chimney cap is installed on all open flues
Check fascia boards and trim for rot, damage, or separation from the structure

Interior Check.

Many entry points are easier to spot from inside, where pipes and wires pass through walls and floors. Check under sinks, behind appliances, and in utility spaces.

Check under kitchen and bathroom sinks for unsealed pipe penetrations
Pull stove and refrigerator away from the wall and check for gaps around gas and water lines
Check water heater closets, furnace rooms, and laundry areas for unsealed penetrations
Inspect basement or crawlspace for gaps where plumbing, wiring, and ductwork pass through floors and walls
Check attic access points and hatch for proper sealing

Section 6

Yard and Perimeter.

The habitat layer that determines whether pests approach the building in the first place. Clearance, mulch, vegetation, firewood, water, and food sources.

Maintain a 12- to 18-inch clearance zone between the foundation and mulch, plantings, or ground cover
Keep mulch no deeper than 2 to 3 inches in beds near the house
Trim shrubs and tree branches so nothing touches the house, roof, or gutters
Store firewood at least 20 feet from the home and elevated off the ground
Eliminate all standing water: dump containers, clean gutters, fix dripping faucets
Confirm all outdoor trash and recycling containers have tight-fitting lids
